Message from the President

By cycloneice@hotmail.com 08/06/2020, 3:30pm EDT

Cyclones Nation:
This message is going out to any family with a player registered for tryouts this season with the Kent Cyclones.

We continue to work with the rink on planning for tryouts, practices, and eventually our anticipated season with the CSHL.  Additional information is being prepared that will provide you with proper instructions, while attending future events at the rink.  We are asking all participants to be good stewards of the facilities we use.  As an example, please begin to familiarize yourself with the Flashes Safe Seven, as these guidelines are just one piece of information we have used to prepare Cyclones guidelines for this upcoming season, which will be posted on our website when ready.  This planning continues under the assumptions that state and local health officials approve of continuing such events.  All of this is subject to change throughout this global pandemic.

Gaiters & Uniforms:

Per City of Kent, KSU, and Cyclones rules, face coverings will be required within the city and campus limits.  We have chosen to acquire one for each player, coach, and committee volunteer this season.  We are anticipating them being ready just in time to start tryouts.  Anticipate wearing your own face coverings for your first visit, and we will have these for pick up at tryouts.  Additional gaiters (w/ personalization options) may be purchased through our online store here:  https://www.hockeyservices.com/product-category/kent-hockey/.   This is the same sight we used for uniforms.  The initial order is almost complete.  Those of you that ordered uniform materials should start receiving billing confirmations as they begin to ship.  Anyone interested in placing orders for our 2nd shipment may start placing orders now.  The cut off for the season is expected to be August 28th.

Anticipated Coaches:  Thank you for applying.  While we will not select coaches until after teams are formed, we are anticipating all who applied to have a role.  A new online training course will be offered prior to you officially being named to a team.  This will be a NEW requirement for this season, and it will replace our prior years Coaches and Team Managers offsite meeting.  Two training sessions will be offered online (you only need to attend one)

  • August 6th @ 6:30. We will use this as a test run and is optional. Links will be sent later.
  • August 27th @ 6:30. This will be the final and mandatory if you miss the first one.

Failure to attend one of these sessions will have you removed from consideration as a coach or assistant coach for this season.Note:Those considering being a Team Manager, special training will be broken out after teams are formed managers selected. For those interested, please hold Sept. 3rd @ 6:30 for Team Managers.

Tryouts:

We are working to post the detailed schedule to our website.  Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we are updating our registration waiver, and a follow-on notification will be sent to you.  If for any reason you plan to miss all or part of tryouts, please respond to this message with details so that we may plan accordingly in alignment with our absence policy.

High School:  Anticipate two ice sessions, one Aug. 22 and one Aug. 23.  You will receive follow up information with a proposed practice schedule beginning the week of Aug. 25 for those who are selected for the team.

Mite through Bantam:  Anticipate beginning on Aug. 18th.  As in years past, we are planning a progression through a 3-step process.

  • Goalies (does not include Mites):  Anticipate a special goalie only session on Friday Aug. 21st.  For the skating days, expect to be contacted individually to sign up for slots.  Not every goalie will be at every skating session.  If you are not signed up to be a goalie for a skating session, you may choose to skate out with the skaters.
  • Saturday Aug. 22 Group Assignments:  Age groups will be split into two groups.  We intend to post these online and at the arena.  Remember these for the following week.
  • Skills Week (Mite to Bantam):  Beginning Sunday Aug. 23, we anticipate offering a skills week for all players who attended tryouts.  These schedules will be based on the groups you are assigned for Saturday Aug. 22 tryouts.

Cyclones Board members will be present for all of tryouts.  We should be wearing red gaiters vs. the black versions other volunteers and players will be provided.  Feel free to ask us any questions or report any issues you see through this process.

Season Registration:  In order to assign players to a roster, a separate registration for the season will need to be completed.  This is where payments will begin.  We may provide access to this registration in advance.  For now, this is awareness only.  Your team assignment will NOT be guaranteed until you have completed this registration.  This is where we will house the previously aforementioned USA Hockey Registration number, as well as our updated waivers and codes of conduct this season.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  In the meantime, stay safe, stay cool, and have fun.  Keep an eye on the website for future postings.

Sincerely,
Brandon Grote, Kent Cyclones President
